According to Western officials, Putin’s army is purposefully attacking the infrastructure needed for food production and blocking ports vital for shipping cereals out of Ukraine, which is the “breadbasket” of Europe. However, Britain could be set to save the day as a bill which will open the door to genetically altered crops being grown and developed in England will be published this week. Genetically altered crops are prohibited by the EU but gene modification can create crops that are more resistant to heat or water shortages and can repel weeds without herbicides. On the day that Boris Johnson became Prime Minister, he said: “Let us start now to liberate the UK’s extraordinary bioscience sector from anti genetic modification rules and . . . develop the blight-resistant crops that will feed the world.”
