Cardi B took to Twitter on Wednesday (Aug. 28) to once again defend her victory as the first solo female to win best rap album at the 2019 Grammy Awards for her Invasion of Privacy debut. The Bronx native got candid about being depressed while pregnant and recording the project amid label issues.
“I did it all while I was pregnant, throwing up, drowsy, terrible colds and in a rush to finish it so I can start doing music videos before I started showing,” she wrote. “I’d spend 24 hours for months sleeping on a couch with my pregnant depressed ass in a studio.”
Bardi continued to explain that Offset was the one to actually secure features for her project behind the scenes, as she had just split with her longtime manager, and says she didn’t have much of a relationship with anyone at Atlantic Records. “Trust me, a lot of artists said no, or charging six figures for a feature,” the 26-year-old said.
Cardi found solace in a quote Nipsey Hussle used to congratulate her on the victory, “When it’s your time, it’s your time.” She now uses those words when giving advice to emerging acts. “Now, when I speak to upcoming artist or people who ask me for advice, I tell them the same thing,” she proclaimed. “WHEN IS YOUR TIME IS YOUR TIME, and when it comes, don’t let nobody take that special moment away from you.”
Cardi’s tweets come amid the release of Travis Scott’s Look Mom I Can fly Netflix documentary, which shows footage of a discouraged La Flame losing out to Cardi earlier this year in real time.
“So when I won a Grammy for it, I didn’t have no words to say, but when I went home, I started reminiscing on what I went thru during that period,” the “Bodak Yellow” rapper concluded. “I was like YEA BITCH YOU DESERVE THIS SHIT! And until this day my shit still charting.”
