While coming off his blockbuster Aladdin and with another potential hit in Gemini Man coming soon, Will Smith has just landed his next role in Netflix’s The Council.
Deadline reports that the 50 year old actor will portray real life New York City crime boss Nicky Barnes in The Council, and he is also producing through his Overbrook Entertainment company with his partner James Lassiter.
Barnes had previously been portrayed on the big screen by Cuba Cooding Jr. in 2007’s American Gangster, and by Sean Combs in 2005’s Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power.

Smith will reunite with his Concussion writer Peter Landesman, who will write the script and executive produce The Council.
The film will tell the untold story of a crime syndicate made up of seven African-American men who ruled New York City in the 1970s and early 1980s.
